NexGard Combo for Cats

Nexgard Combo is an anti-parasitic monthly spot-on treatment used to treat both internal and external parasites in cats. Nexgard combo treats external parasites like fleas, ticks, ear mites or skin mites, and internal intestinal parasites like hookworms, tapeworms and roundworms. It can also be used to treat lungworms that infect the bladder. Nexgard combo also prevents heartworms and can be used as part of the management of flea allergy dermatitis.

Nexgard Combo – Topical Treatment for Cats

Nexgard Combo contains three main ingredients, Esafoxolaner, Eprinomectin and Praziquantel, which work in different ways to kill external and internal parasites.

Esafoxolaner, being an ectoparasiticide, works on the external parasites that live on the fur of the cat. It interrupts the neurotransmission of the external parasites, resulting in uncontrolled activity of the parasite’s nervous system and death.

The other two ingredients, Eprinomectin and Praziquantel, are endoparasiticides. They work on the internal parasites that live inside the cat’s body. Prazoquantel kills tapeworms by damaging their cell membranes, and Eprinomectin kills roundworms by paralyzing their nervous systems.

Note: NexGard Combo is safe to use on cats older than 8 weeks of age.

The Science Behind the Efficacy

Nexgard Combo contains a triple-action formula including esafoxolaner (specially designed for cats), eprinomectin and praziquantel. After administration, the topical formula is spread throughout the cat's body and the active ingredients are absorbed into the systemic circulation as shown in the image.

ScienceEfficant

The formula impacts ectoparasites such as fleas and ticks as soon as these parasites take a blood meal. At the same time, it acts on endoparasites through oral absorption or transcuticular/integument absorption, according to the worm species.

The following frequently asked questions (FAQs) may help answer a few queries about Nexgard Combo for Cats.

Yes, Nexgard Combo comes with wide safety margins. It is safe for use in kittens and cats from 8 weeks of age, weighing at least 1.8 lbs including heartworm-positive cats.

The safe use of Nexgard Combo has not been evaluated in breeding, pregnant, or lactating cats.

Yes, even an indoor cat is susceptible to parasitic infestations. Fleas and ticks can hitchhike in your house on people or other pets and infest an indoor cat. Other pets or animals including cockroaches or rodents can get infected with intestinal worms that can be transmitted to the indoor cat. Plus, infected mosquitoes can transmit the deadly heartworm disease to the cat that doesn't go outside.

It is likely you are seeing newly attached fleas on your cat, which get attached to your cat when the cat moves around flea-infested areas and this shall continue depending on the environmental conditions. Nexgard Combo shall kill these fleas soon before they can reproduce. It is, therefore, necessary to provide your cats with a flea treatment throughout the year without interruption.

The use of Nexgard Combo together with other treatments, including vaccines, antibiotics, analgesics, etc., does not affect its efficacy. For specific concurrent use of Nexgard Combo, please speak to your vet.

Yes, the treatment with Nexgard Combo can be started any time during the year. To prevent heartworm disease, it is recommended to administer Nexgard Combo once every month, at least 3 months after the last exposure to mosquitoes.
